30 pass Sharia bar examination

Thirty out of 77 examinees passed the Sharia bar examination conducted by the Supreme Court in July, 2001, with Samsodin M. Bedar as first placer with 88.72 percent.
Office on Muslim Affairs (OMA) Executive Director Habib Mujahab Hashim said the successful examinees made their compatriots proud and gave life to the practice of Sharia law in the country.

"I must also acknowledge with sense of gratitude the accommodations extended to the (OMA) by the Honorable Supreme Court of the Philippines in the pursuit of this common and noble endeavor. But it is to Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo that we reserve our kindest words for providing the impetus and encouragement for this legal program to develop and flourish," Hashim said.
Director Metalicop Domado of the OMA-Bureau of Muslim Cultural Affairs said the 8th series of 45-day Sharia training seminar will kick off on April 15 in Marawi City.Other centers are in the cities of Cotabato, Zamboanga and Jolo and at the University of the Philippines, Quezon City.
Former congressman Michael Mastura, chairman; lawyer Musib Buat, retired Judge Corocoy Moson; Jurisconsult Saadudin Alauya; and Judge Bensaudi Arabani as members made up the 2001 special Sharia bar tests committee, he said.
Domado announced that Hadja Rueda Ebos Usman has been elevated as the new chief of the OMA-BMCA Sharia Education and Training Division, replacing Laman Piang who was promoted to administrative director.
A P1,000 fee is required by the Supreme Court for admission and membership for the new Sharia lawyers,with those lacking in requirements asked to complete their papers, he said



Chief Justice Hilario David had earlier urged "Sharia judges, personnel, and Sharia practitioners to be instruments in forging lasting peace in Mindanao" and exercise their duties with dedication and efficiency to enhance further the administration of justice.
The High Tribunal's Acting Bar Confidant Ma. Cristina Layusa had informed the OMA that the oathtaking of the new Sharia counsellors will be on March 12 at the Supreme Court. (OMA has set a testimonial dinner on March 13 .)
Other top 10 examinees are Abdul R. Pangarungan Jr., 84.45 percent; Juhari A. Aguam, 84.275; Agakhan G. Alonto, 84.05; Swaib H. Mohammad, 83.65; Ibrahim A. Bagumbun, 83.125; Recondaya R. Macud, 82.875; Laut Saddath M. Hadji Said, 82.825; Musa M. Macapasir, 82.65; and Abdullah M. Linog, 82.07.
